Officially there are five gates – five ways in – to Trinity, but there are many more ways to access and explore this site, and observations, memories, and fictions by people who have known and lived it are no less direct as ways in, and through, the place. This aspect of Remapping Trinity explores the College through performance, reviving and resituating words and voices from Trinity at different points across the campus. Trinity’s site in the centre of Dublin is variously figured and imagined, most often as an enclosed space, separate from the life of the city which surrounds it. But it is also possible to think of Trinity as a site of connection – a bridge rather than an island – which offers different routes across Dublin, and through Irish history and society. This promenade performance enacts those connections, leading its audience in and out of those five gates, and the spaces between.
